| In the Nibelungenlied, Etzil is thought to be based on Attila the Hun. Following Siegfried's murder, Kriemhild is induced by her brothers to marry Etzil, with whom they seek an alliance. Etzil hosts a meeting of chieftians, including the Gibech brothers. Through Kriehild's machinations, the meeting turns into a blood bath. This marks the beginning of the last phase of the Nibelungenlied. | |||||||||||||
