Julius Caesar, versatile military general, writer, and astronomer. Ruthless in using money and oratory to gain power, once gained, he used it moderately. His armies conquered Gaul and created a far-flung empire. Caesar was assassinated by conspirators in Rome on the Ides of March in 44 B.C.E. He left is mark on the history of Rome and Europe.
