Only in his final years did Louis XV make an effort to take full control of his own government.

Louis XV (1710 -1774) ruled as King of France from 1715 until his death. He brought France further towards bankruptcy through lavish spending and several wars with England, Austria, the Ottoman Empire, and Prussia. Considered to be the “First Gentleman of Europe”, he was a man of great charm and easy morals. His many mistresses were famous.
