Text: Marie Antoinette (at court) Signature

The public only saw her as an arrogant Queen living lavishly—“Mme. Deficit”.

Ceremonial life at court demanded the royals make a grand display of themselves. “Court Dress” was required for state occasions. However, the Queen was known for her preference for simplicity in dress. The hostile public only saw her as a clothes horse, further adding to her unpopularity.
